Individual Residential Alternatives - IRA

Our IRA apartments are certified by the  Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). We have 10 apartments in two counties and are located in Wappingers Falls, and Kingston at present.  Each apartment is for a single adult and one apartment is a shared apartment. Staff are available based on the individual needs of each resident and may be as little as once weekly or as much as daily. Each home has staff available for emergencies 24 hours per day. Residents participate in meal preparation, chores and social activities. Most residents participate daily in some type of valued activity. This might include Day Hab., therapy, work, or education. Staff are available to provide training and support in the following habilitation areas:

Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs) are certified homes that provide room, board and individualized service options. There are two different kinds of IRAs. A Supervised Individualized Residential Alternative is a home that has staff nearby at all times that individuals are at the residence. A Supportive Individualized Residential Alternative is a home in which living is more independent and supervision is based on the person’s needs for supervision; staff typically are not onsite at all times when residents are home. Gateway provides Supportive IRA’s.

All residents who participate in the Certified Apartment program must have Medicaid and will be responsible for a monthly rental payment that will provide for:
  • All food
  • Bed Linens
  • Furnishings
  • Staff Coverage
  • Necessary Transportation
  • Support and Counseling Services
  • Limited recreation activities
Each resident is responsible to pay his or her own clothing above what is provided and a portion of their own social activities.

The IRA program is considered permanent housing program. There is no established length of stay.
